After more than 20 allowed of stagnation and slow growth, Myanmar Tourism gained momentum when the government has permitted private entrepreneurs to form tour companies in 1992-1993. In an effort to systematically organize and develop this nascent industry, the Union of Myanmar Travel Association (UMTA) was established on March 5, 2002 with acknowledge of the Ministry of Hotels & Tourism and UMTA started to run activities from April 1, 2002 onwards.
